Weber State athletics: All 14 programs meet Academic Progress Rate standard

Wednesday , May 23, 2018 - 7:30 PM

The NCAA released its updated Academic Progress Rate numbers through the 2016-17 season Wednesday, and the report shows that all 14 of Weber State’s athletic programs meet the minimum APR standing.

The NCAA explains APR as “a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term.”

Four years of APR scores are used to calculate a “multi-year rate” that determines a team’s standing. The rate for good standing is 930 or above, while 1,000 is a perfect score.

Women’s volleyball leads WSU’s department with a score of 995. They join the women’s programs of cross country, soccer, tennis and golf as teams above the national average of 983, with men’s golf meeting that average.

Programs that fail to meet the minimum standard receive sanctions from the NCAA like probation or temporary loss of scholarships.

The football program, which met penalties and scholarship reductions ever year from 2006-10, is now at 946, its highest multi-year score since APR was introduced in 2004 — but still third-lowest of 13 football schools in the Big Sky.

“Academics is a major priority at Weber State and we are proud of the excellent work being done in the classroom by our student-athletes,” Weber State athletic director Jerry Bovee said in a news release. “We have invested an extensive amount of time and resources to academic success for our student-athletes, and we strive to be at the top of our conference in and out of the classroom.”

The multi-year rate for men’s basketball is 954 and women’s basketball is 962.

UC Davis leads Big Sky football at 974. In men’s basketball, Sacramento State’s multi-year rate is a perfect 1,000. Northern Arizona is the worst in both sports — at 940 for football and 930 for men’s basketball.

Men’s track is the only WSU program below 940. Its score of 936 is down from 946 in 2015, which is when the NCAA combined indoor and outdoor track into one program for APR purposes.
